July 8, 2008

Coming in at No. 2 on the The Terrier Twelve is the women's lacrosse team's run of eight straight goals to close out a 16-8 victory over rival New Hampshire in the first round of the NCAA tournament on May 11. Junior Sarah Dalton matched a career high with six goals, including four in the late run, to help the Terriers break an 8-8 deadlock and advance to the quarterfinal round for just the second time in program history.

The two conference rivals had met twice earlier in the season, with the Terriers claiming a one-goal win on both occasions. It certainly felt like the third mathc-up would also come down to the wire, as the two teams were tied or separated by a single goal for 40 of the game's first 42 minutes of play.

After a goal by sophomore Xan Weitzel gave BU its first lead of the second half at 8-7 with 21:44 left in regulation, UNH tied the game just under two minutes later. The Terriers, however, dominated from that point on, reeling off eight straight goals and keeping the Wildcats scoreless for the final 20 minutes of play.

Junior Steph Walker turned in a strong performance, matching career bests in both goals (3) and points (4). Weitzel had two goals and two assists, while senior Lauren Morton and sophomore Traci Landy each recorded a pair of goals and an assist. Senior co-captain Molly Collins recorded five draw controls, four caused turnovers and three ground balls.

The Terriers eventually fell to Penn, the eventual national runner-up, by a score of 8-5 in the NCAA quarterfinals. Dalton, the America East Player of the Year, went on to earn first-team All-America honors, while Morton was a second-team selection. In addition to Dalton and Morton, Collins, Landy, junior Kelly Munroe and sophomore Rachel Klein were all-region honorees.
