Geragosian Scholarship Fund Established for BU Women's Ice Hockey

BOSTON - The Boston University Department of Athletics and the Office of Terrier Pride have proudly announced the establishment of an endowed scholarship in the name of Mike Geragosian, assistant coach of the men's ice hockey team. The Mike Geragosian Scholarship, funded with an initial commitment of $500,000 from an anonymous donor, will be awarded annually to a women's ice hockey goaltender.

Geragosian inspired the gift through his passion for coaching and loyal friendship with the donor's family. The scholarship was created in his name to honor his devotion to his players and his passion for BU athletics.

"This is a wonderful tribute to Mike and our program. Our players are honored to receive such support," said Brian Durocher, head coach of the BU women's ice hockey team, former BU goalie and longtime friend of Geragosian.

Head men's ice hockey coach Jack Parker, who has worked with Geragosian for eight years said: "More than a coach, Mike is a great teacher. Education is his passion and when he coaches you can see it so clearly. It makes his coaching incredibly effective."

"He's not only a good coach but a great person, and we are so fortunate to have him at BU," said director of athletics Mike Lynch. "We're thrilled that he's being honored for the quality of his character."

Geragosian began his career as an All-New England goaltender at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he still holds the ECAC record for most saves in a playoff game with 64 against Vermont during the 1972 tournament. In 1978 he began his coaching career at his alma mater, leading Lowell through the transition to Division I play in Hockey East. In 1981 Geragosian was inducted into the River Hawks' Hall of Fame and became the Director of Development for Goaltenders with USA Hockey in Massachusetts -- a position he still holds.

"This is a huge honor," said Geragosian, who will enter his ninth season as the Terriers' goalie coach this fall. "Usually people name scholarships like this for a family member. This gift will link my name to the BU family forever, and I am truly flattered."
