Michael P. Lynch was named Director of Athletics at Boston University in April 2004 and immediately launched an aggressive new course for Terrier athletics. Over the past three years since his arrival, Boston University has won 18 league and 67 individual conference championships, and teams or individuals have advanced to participate in NCAA championship competition 25 times. BU student-athletes have performed admirably in the classroom as well during this time, with nearly half achieving a grade point average of 3.0 or better, while dedicating thousands of hours of service to the greater Boston community. During the 2006-07 academic year, Lynch helped guide the athletic department to six league championships and its fifth Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner's Cup -- recognizing the America East's top athletic program -- in the past six years. Among the other major accomplishments of Lynch's tenure, Terrier athletics has introduced a new scholarship program to support the educational aspirations of student-athletes, integrated fundraising and marketing operations, reorganized central business functions, completed a branding initiative to strengthen program visibility and notoriety, pushed the utilization of technology as a differentiating medium for the department including a complete relaunch of the athletics department website, GoTerriers.com, initiated a new community service program, enhanced coaching and administrative salaries to improve recruitment and retention, and undertaken additional capital improvements including new locker and training facilities for women's teams. Boston University has also successfully hosted numerous conference and national events, including the 2006 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship, which drew record attendance. BU will play host to the 2009 NCAA Women's Frozen Four at Agganis Arena. In addition to leading Boston University's athletic efforts, Lynch also plays a leading role in helping to shape conference initiatives. He currently serves as a member of the Executive Committee of both the America East Conference and the Hockey East Association. He is also a contributing member to America East's Strategic Planning Committee and Hockey East's Marketing Committee. Lynch's previous work experience includes over 13 years of management in higher education administration, university advancement and athletics administration, during which time Lynch has: Planned and executed fundraising strategies resulting in highly successful capital campaigns totaling over $100 million in gift income at three different institutions. At Boston University, increased annual support for athletics by greater than 200 percent to over $9 million annually. Prior to being named AD, Lynch served as Assistant Vice President of Development for Athletics and Student Life at BU. Lynch implemented best practices and developed and expanded fundraising models that saw year over year increases averaging 11 percent in annual support and helped generate close to $60 million in capital commitments. Lynch is also credited with leadership roles in two capital fund-raising campaigns at the University of Miami (FL) where he served as Assistant AD for Development prior to coming to Boston University. A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Lynch is a former professional and collegiate All-American baseball player. Lynch earned a B.A. in Political Science from Rollins College and an M.S. in Educational Administration from the University at Albany. |
