Holland Named AE Rookie of the Year, Lowe Earns AE Second Team Honors

Freshman John Holland

March 7, 2008

VESTAL, N.Y. - Freshman John Holland (Bronx, N.Y.) is the 2008 America East Rookie of the Year award, earning spots on the All-Conference Third Team and the All-Rookie and All-Defensive teams as well, the America East announced on Friday morning at the conference awards banquet at Binghamton University. Sophomore guard Corey Lowe (Newton, Mass.) received All-America East Second Team honors.

This year marks the second time in program history Terriers have won back-to-back league Rookie of the Year honors. In 1994 and 1995 Tunji Awojobi and Raja Bell won, and last year red-shirt sophomore Tyler Morris received the award.

A six-time America East Rookie of the Week, Holland has started 16-of-28 games played while averaging 11.5 ppg and totaling a team-best 44 steals. He scored a career- and America East season-high 38 points in a Terrier win over Hartford on Feb. 28. Holland's emergence as a player matched the team's resurgence during the second half of the season. The rookie is averaging 19.4 points and 7.0 rebounds over his last eight games.

Lowe, a 2007 All-Rookie selection, leads the Terriers with 18.5 ppg and 82 assists. He was a two-time America East Player of the Week this season and currently ranks 10th in the nation with a league-leading 3.8 3-pointers made per game. Lowe shattered the program record for most threes made in a season this year, standing at the top of that list with 91 so far. His three streaks of three games with 20 or more points lead the America East.
