Terriers Tip With Hartford On Sunday in AE Semis

VESTAL, N.Y. - The No. 6 seeded Boston University men's basketball team is set to tip off with No. 2 Hartford on Sunday, March 9 at 2:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the 2008 America East tournamnet held at Binghamton University. TOURNAMENT HISTORY: BU is 38-23 all-time in America East Tournament play (including when the league was known as the ECAC North from 1979-82 and the ECAC North Atlantic Conference from 1982-96). The Terriers have won the title on five occasions, most recently in 2002, and they have been to the championship game a league-best 12 times. BU is 13-5 in semifinal action all-time. SERIES HISTORY: Boston University holds a 37-17 all-time lead in the series and has won 11 of the last 13 meetings. The Terriers are 2-1 against the Hawks on neutral courts and 2-2 in overtime. STORLINES: The Terriers are 13-5 overall in semifinal action, but have never reached as a No. 6 seed. BU is 3-1 in the America East tournament against Hartford. The teams' last meeting in the conference tourney was on March 3, 2002 when BU advanced to the championship game (and won the tournament title) after Stijn Dhondt hit a three with 0.8 seconds left to give the Terriers a 63-60 win in Northeastern's Mathews Arena. That was the last time BU advanced to the NCAAs as well. Both teams come into the game on tears; BU has won nine of its last 11 games, while Hartford has won seven of its last nine and has won two consecutive games. This season UH is 3-0 on neutral floors while BU is 1-0. BU VS. SCOUTING THE HAWKS: Sophomore guard Joe Zeglinski led UH in the Hawks' win over UNH yesterday with 22 points. He is also the team's leading scorer, averaging 16.2 ppg. Zeglinski has been carrying Hartford of late, registering as the team's leading scorer in eight of the last nine games. Junior Michael Turner's 5.7 rpg are a Hawk best.
LAST TIME VS. HARTFORD (FEB. 28, 2008; W, 97-66): Behind a career night from freshman John Holland, the Boston University men's basketball team defeated Hartford, 97-66. Holland finished the game with a career-best 38 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the year. The first half was all Holland as he scored 19 of the Terriers' 49 first-half points. BU went into the locker room up by 20 points and came out firing in the second, starting the frame on a 17-5 run. Holland led four players in double figures - sophomore Corey Lowe who had 21, sophomore Carlos Strong with 16 and sophomore Scott Brittain who added 14. Red-shirt junior Matt Wolff played excellent defense, cleaned up on the glass with a career-high 11 rebounds and dished out a career-high-tying seven assists. Junior Marques Johnson also tied his personal best with seven dimes. Joe Zeglinski led Hartford with 14 points BU shot 49.2 percent for the game, including 56.3 percent in the first half. The Terriers forced 17 Hawk turnovers and scored 23 points off those miscues. For the third straight game BU dominated in the paint, out-scoring UH 38-24, and the Terriers made a statement on the glass by out-boarding the Hawks, 47-26 - the largest margin of the year. BU-UH NOTES FROM FEB. 28: The Terriers defeated UH by 31 points, the first time since Dec. 7, 2004 BU won by 30 or more points. That game BU won 92-55 over Harvard. That contest was also the last time the Terriers scored 90 or more points in a game. Matt Wolff and John Holland each grabbed 11 rebounds. It is the second time this season two players have had more than 10 rebounds in the same game. Before this season, the last time that happened was Jan. 14, 2000 when Jean Avebe and Paul Seymour had 14 and 10, respectively, in a loss to Delaware. The Terriers totaled a season-high 22 assists. BU limited the league's second-best 3-point shooting team to 28.6 percent (6-for-21) from deep. |
