Men's Crew Hosts GW, Wisconsin, MIT This Weekend

Men's Crew

May 2, 2008

BOSTON - Boston University men's crew has a full weekend of racing ahead as the Terriers host George Washington on Saturday, May 3 starting at 9 a.m. and competes for the Jablonic Cup on Sunday, May 4 against Wisconsin with MIT beginning at 8 a.m.

George Washington is just outside the top 20 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing national poll. The Colonials fell to Georgetown last weekend by eight seconds.

BU raced Syracuse and Columbia for the Conlan and Lusins cups last week, finishing behind both crews in the varsity eight races. The varsity eight got off to a good start, but its stroke rating fell in the second 500m as Columbia and Syracuse pressed on. An errant fishing boat further complicated the race for the varsity. Columbia won the race in 5:42.34, followed by Syracuse in 5:45.71 and BU in 5:56.91.

On Sunday, the No. 17 Terriers and the No. 3 Badgers meet for the 20th time to contest the Jablonic Cup. Wisconsin holds an 18-2 lead in the all-time series and has held the cup for the last two years. BU's most recent victory came in 2005 when the Terriers beat Wisco by nearly nine seconds (6:04.6 to 6:13.4). The varsity boat trailed Wisconsin by a length early, but after the 500-meter mark, the Terriers began to gain, and were nearly even passing under the Mass. Ave. bridge. BU took the lead after clearing the bridge and held it to the finish. It was Boston University's first win since 1995.

After this weekend, the Terriers take a week off to prepare for the Eastern Sprints, held May 18 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.
