MacArthur Named Men's Ice Hockey MVP; Gilroy, McCarthy Selected as 2008-09 Co-Captains


Senior Pete MacArthur was named the team's most valuable player for the 2007-08 season.

BOSTON - Senior Pete MacArthur (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was named the Boston University men's ice hockey team's most valuable player at the annual Friends of Hockey banquet on Friday evening at George Sherman Union. Juniors Matt Gilroy (North Bellmore, N.Y.) and John McCarthy (Andover, Mass.) were selected as co-captains for the 2008-09 season, while sophomore Brian Strait (Waltham, Mass.) will serve as an alternate captain.

In addition to earning the George V. Brown Award (most valuable player), MacArthur also received the Ed Carpenter Award, which is given to the player who leads the team in scoring. It was the third straight year MacArthur earned the accolade.

Senior Bryan Ewing was named Most Improved Player, while classmate Ryan Weston was the recipient of the Friends/Albert Sidd Award, given to the team's unsung hero. Fellow senior Craig Sanders was named the winner of the Bennett McInnis Memorial Spirit Award for the second time in as many years.

McCarthy was also honored with the Regina Eilberg Scholarship, signifying the player who performs the best both on the ice an in the classroom. Strait took home the Clifford P. Fitzgerald Scholarship, which is given annually to the top rising junior/senior defenseman.
