Field Hockey Holds Annual Banquet; Ross, Perreault, Wiles Named 2008 Tri-Captains

BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team recently honored its accomplished 2007 squad at the program's annual banquet, held at George Sherman Union. Senior Pam Spuehler (Sudbury, Mass.) was named the team's Most Valuable Player, while junior Lizzie Perreault (Teaticket, Mass.) and sophomore Gabby Hajjar (Ottawa Hills, Ohio) were co-recipients of the Most Improved Player award. Junior Hayly Ross (North Yarmouth, Maine), who was elected a 2008 tri-captain along with Perreault and Holly Wiles (Harare, Zimbabwe), received the BUFHA Spirit Award.

The Terriers recapped their terrific 2007 season, which saw saw the team win its third straight America East title and advance to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time since 1991. BUFHA also honored its eight-member senior class, which won a program-record 61 games over the past four seasons.

Spuehler was a first-team NFHCA All-American last fall after tallying a team-high 37 points on 11 goals and 15 assists. Hajjar had a breakthrough season with 19 points, including nine goals, while Perreault again took her play to another level and became the first two-time winner of the team's Most Improved Player award.

Ross scored a pair of goals this season and will be a key member of the Terrier strikers next fall. Perreault and Wiles have been key anchors at left and center back, respectively, and have combined to make 113 starts over the past three seasons. Wiles had 16 points on six goals and four assists in 2007.


 

 

  • At BU's Student-Athlete Awards Reception on April 28, Spuehler was the recipient of the Mildred Barnes Award, given annually to the top female athlete at BU. Fellow senior Sarah Hudak (Harleysville, Pa.) was honored with the prestigious Woman of the Year Award and classmate Hadley Adams (Barre, Mass.) was recognized as having the top GPA of any female student-athlete at BU.

  • The Terriers wrapped up their spring season on Saturday (April 26) at the BC Spring Tournament, competing against UConn, Syracuse, Harvard and BC.

  • Former BU assistant coach Tiffany Snow and the U.S. National Team qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Belgium at the World Hockey Olympic Qualifier championship in Kazan, Russia. Snow scored the game-winning goal, breaking a 1-1 tie with a redirect near the right post.
