Lacrosse Makes Third Straight Appearance at Boston's Race for the Cure



BOSTON – The Boston University women's lacrosse team kicked off the fall semester with its yearly participation in the 14th annual Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure 5k Run on Sunday, Sept. 10. This marked the third straight year BU lacrosse has run in this race, which helps to raise money in the fight against breast cancer.

Along with over 5,200 participants, the Terriers helped to raise over $500,000 for breast cancer research at this Boston event. In addition to raising money to eradicate breast cancer, the race also helps to educate men and women on the importance of early detection, while promoting health awareness and teaching valuable lessons in cancer survival. Mayor Tom Menino and numerous cancer survivors spoke to the crowds about their own personal battles and triumphs as well as thanking the thousands of people for all for their hard work and dedication.

Sophomore Sarah Dalton (Cornwall, Vt.) and freshman Caitlin DeFliese (Garden City, N.Y.) were the Terriers’ top two finishers in the 5,000-meter race, finishing first and sixth in their age group. respectively. Dalton finished the 3.2-mile race in 20:46, placing her 51st overall out of 1,800 runners, while Defliese finished 123rd with a time of 22:51. Sophomore Stephanie Walker (Winchester, Mass.) and senior captains Kait Gentry (Towson, Md.) and Angie Martin (Catonsville, Md.) were the next in for BU placing 127th, 128th and 129th, respectively.
